What it is

The crew cuts the tree down, either in one piece where there's room for it to fall, or in sections when it's close to a house, fence or garden. The branches are usually chipped and the wood cut into rounds.

The stump is left at ground level unless you also book stump grinding. Check whether hauling away the wood and chips is included in the price.

The tree is dead, or more than half the crown has died back
It's leaning more than it used to, or the soil is heaving on one side
It's too close to the house, foundation or driveway
It's an ash tree killed by emerald ash borer
You're making room for construction or a garden

Good to know

Book stump grinding in the same visit; many companies discount it
Book non-urgent work in late fall or winter, and keep the wood if you can use it
